Title StatementComparison of the pulmonary function between Filipino teen-aged smokers and non smokers in urban secondary school
Physical Description4-13
Summary, Etc.There is limited local data on the effects of cigarette smoking on teenagers. Although the cumulative effects of the toxic substances in chronic smokers have been well established, we sought to investigate the pulmonary function in the young "novice" cigarette smoker. The objective was to determine the effects of active smoking of the pulmonary function of teen-aged smokers as assessed by spirometry. We used an analytical / case control design. Pulmonary function testing (pre- and post-bronchodilator), using spirometry, was performed in 520 non-asthmatic high school junior students from a public school in Taguig. Of the 520 subjects, 48% were smokers and 52% were non-smokers. Means and ranges of age, sex, weight and height for both groups were comparable. Indices measured were FEV, FVC, MMEF, FEV/FVC and PEFR. There was a significant decrease in the pulmonary function of smokers when compared with non-smokers using pulmonary indices in spirometry. The decrease in pulmonary function was dose related and was directly related to the duration of smoking
