Depilatory action of lotion from Mimosa pudica Linne (Family Fabaceae)
Physical Description

Summary, Etc.
Mimosa pudica Linne (Fam Fabaceae) is very popular ornamental due its amazing and unique characteristic of having the ability to close its leaves upon being touched. Traditionally, it is known as a diuretic, alterant and antiasthmatic. This study aimed to evaluate the depilatory action of a lotion containing mimosine as active ingredient. Mimosine was extracted from fresh leaves of makahiya using decoction. Physical and chemical tests and biochemical analysis of the mechanism of action of mimosine on tyrosine were done. The effect of different concentrations (0.4 percent and 4 percent) of mimosine on human and on mice hair strands was compared to commercially available hair removal creams. It was found that the 4 percent preparation gives the greater depilatory action on both human and mice hair strand. In addition, mimosine was observed to interfere with the tyrosine activity. Most importantly, human and mice hair strand were microscopically shown to be damaged. Drug-excipient compatibility testing with mineral oil, stearic acid, cetyl alcohol, glycerin, methyl paraben, water, perfume and triethanolamine to 3 different temperatures was done. Mimosine was then formulated into a lotion using the aforementioned excipients. The efficacy of mimosine lotion on mice as topical depilatory was evaluated to be as good as other commercially available hair removing preparations. The final product packed on a light resistant opaque tube must be stored at temperature 15 degrees-30 degrees C to retain its mocca brown smooth creamy appearance. Mimosine lotion was computed to cost Php 40.78 per tube of 25 mL which is cheaper than the commercially available hair removing creams. (Author)
