Summary, Etc.
A survey of pallet industry in Metro Manila revealed that there are only five big pallet manufacturers. The species used for pallets are apitong, tanguile and lauan. It was estimated that 60% of the total pallet cost was consumed by lumber costs. There was no standard size of pallets in the Philippines. Pallets were fabricated from coco-hard, coco-soft and tanguile. A two-way entry, reversible, flush stinger pallet whose dimension is 900 x 900 mm was adopted. This was the most commonly used and claimed to be practical and more efficient. Comparative performance of the three kinds of pallets was tested in the laboratory based on American Society for Testing and Materials standard. In the corner-test, all the pallets had endured drops on all its four corners at 2 and 4 ft high. At a height of 5 ft coco-hard had survived 5.24 cycles at 1.52 m elevation; coco-soft, 6.1 cycles; while tanguile, 7.24 cycles. At the end of these cycles, all the pallets were heavily damaged and no longer useable. In the incline-impact test, all pallets performed equally well. All pallets survived the impact from 4 to 18 ft elevation without major damage. There were only slight splits and no adverse damage was observed. The results proved that coco-lumber has potential as substitute lumber material for pallets
