Title StatementDevelopment of herd health program for sheep production
General NoteMagalang, Pampanga: Pampanga Agricultural College, 1993. 33 p
Summary, Etc.The incidence of diseases in sheep was monitored. Three groups were examined, namely: (a) sheep raised in commercial farms with a combined population of not less than 400 heads; (b) sheep raised in semi-commercial farms with below 50 head populations and (c) sheep raised by farmers at less than five heads per farmer. Results showed no significant differences in the incidence among the groups. Respiratory infection was confined during the rainy season (June to October) with morbidity rate ranging from 0.70 to 4.18%, with no mortality recorded. The monthly scouring/diarrhea incidence ranged from 0 to 2.80%, with incidence taking place from June to November. Mortality occurred on the months of July, September and October, with diarrheal symptoms indicative of coccidiosis. The following helminths were identified to affect the sheep: Strongyloides, Trichuris spp. (least prevalent), Moniezia spp. and Haemonchusspp. (most prevalent). Eimeria spp. had a high morbidity rate with 66.25 to 100% of the animals examined. However, scouring incidence was relatively low, indicating some level of tolerance. The presence of leptospirosis and brucellosis reactors was also identified among the sheeps examined. Based on this findings, a health program was developed, taking into consideration the morbidity rate as well as the second occurrence of the different diseases identified to affect the sheep
