Title StatementDetermination of the minimum radius of curvature in which some Philippine rattan species can be safely bent
General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, 1984. 19p. -(UPLB-PCARRD Proj. No. 4201-79.00.02.004)
Summary, Etc.The study determined the minimum radius curvature of rattan species: palasan (Calamus maximus Merr.), limuran (C. ornatus Becc.), tumalin (C. mindorensis Becc.), bugtong (C. merrillii Becc.), ditaan (Daemonorops mollis Becc.), and alimuran (D. clemensianus Becc.). The specimens were divided into different diameter classes, steamed in a nonpressurized drum for two hours, bent in different radii of curvature (10, 20, 30, 40 and 50 cm) and inspected for fractures. Generally, the higher the diameter class and the lower the radius of curvature, the greater the percentage failure of the specimens. This was supported by the chi-square analysis in limuran but not in all the other five species at the 95% level. A 30 to 60% failure was recorded from 2.40 to 3.16 cm rattan diameters curvature of 20 cm and below. However, diameters 3.17 cm and above bent in radii of curvature of 40 cm and below, the percentage failure ran from 40 to 100%. Out of 304 specimens, 89.5% failed in compression, 3.9% in tension, and 6.6% in both compression and tension. These indicated that the compressive strength of rattan is lesser than the tensile strength
