Summary, Etc.
The direction of librarians' turnover or mobility tends to be toward private agencies because of better opportunities and higher salaries offered by these institutions
The factors which tend to influence turnover of librarians were low salary or inadequate pay policies; the organizations' inability to meet the workers' economic needs; future salary prospects; inadequacy of promotion policies; unequal opportunities to attend seminars and conferences; institutional support for travel, conferences, etc.; tedious work; boredom or uninspiring work; routinization; costly transportation expenses; distance of place of work from residence; and for greener pastures or better opportunities outside. On the other hand, such factors as benefits and privileges like educational opportunities they and their dependents/children enjoyed; housing privileges; length of service rendered to government institution or tenure; status of employment; age; family responsibilities; satisfactory supervision; job satisfaction; working condition; love of work; harmonious relationship with co-workers; favorable health and environment/organizational condition; and proximity of home to work area were considered by the stayers to remain on their jobs
The recommendations are the following: a study be conducted on the salary structure of librarians; a restudy on the improvement of present benefits and privileges; improve or establish a more realistic rewards system and policies of promotion and staff development; and hire additional support staff so that professional librarians can spend more of their time on the managerial and professional work
The study was conducted to determine the factors contributing to the turnover and stay of professional librarians. It also attempted to determine the major reasons why these librarians leave or stay on their jobs. Effects of turnover on the library management and possible leavers from among existing professional librarians were determined. One hundred thirty respondent librarians from ten state colleges and universities in Metro Manila, 121 stayers and 9 leavers were the subjects of this study. Frequencies and distribution were used for the descriptive analysis of data. Data were also analyzed and treated with the use of Cross tabulation, Multiple Regression, Wilcoxon Matched Pair Signed Rank Test and Chi-square Test
Turnover is higher among the new and younger librarians
