Title StatementStudies on carabao backyard production
General NoteKabacan, North Cotabato: USM, 1984. pp. 100-138. -(Study 2)
Summary, Etc.This research presented five case studies on carabao poduction to determine the family dynamics of backyard carabao raising, the level of technology, the beliefs and values affecting the level of technology and the indigenous systems related to carabao use. The areas of study were the barangays of Tumbras, Kimagango and Sadaan in Midsayap, North Cotabato. Results showed that carabao raisers were not highly educated. The heads of the family were usually the decision-makers in carabao production. The level of technology on carabao raising was found unsatisfactory. Giving concentrates, deworming, shaving and cutting of carabao nails were least practiced. Certain beliefs influenced the adoption of some management practices. Carabao hair and nails were believed to protect the animal from insect bites. Deworming was not done for fear of destroying the physical appearance of the carabao. Giving salt and concentrates was not commonly practiced because it was expensive. Findings also revealed that carabaos were used for plowing, harrowing, furrowing, pulling sled and hauling farm produce
