Summary, Etc.Household heads in both provinces were 46 years old on the average. Wives were generally five years younger, completed four years of formal schooling, had been farming for an average of 21 years and had a family of five. Community participation, limited to barangay activities, was very minimal indicating dissatisfaction as well as lack of time for such activities. Fifty-four percent of the households had a radio set while over a third did not have any possession purchased by themselves. Furnitures such as chairs and tables were made from available materials. Minimal investment on important implements showed that the farming system was basically subsistance in nature. Nonfarm activities to generate cash included hired labor (40%) and fishing (36%) for men, and selling of food items, crops or vegetables (40%) for women. Crops, poultry, and livestock raising and other nonfarm activities were other sources of income. A little over 1/5 applied fertilizers and pesticides. Clearing, planting, weeding and harvesting were performed by the respondents
