Title StatementAgronomic characterization and economic evaluation of intercropping Virginia tobacco with legumes at different row spacing
General NoteBatac, Ilocos Norte: PTRTC, 1979. 28p
Summary, Etc.The agronomic characteristics and economics of Virginia tobacco production with cowpea, lima bean and mungbean intercrops at different spacings were studied. Row spacing for the main crop were 75, 100 and 120 cm. The hill spacing and rate of seeding per hill for cowpea and lima bean was 25 cm between hills and two plants per hill, and for mungbean - 15 cm between hills and three plants per hill. Row spacing affected the yield quantitatively and qualitatively. Highest yield of tobacco leaves per hectare was obtained at 75 cm distance of planting in monoculture tobacco and in tobacco with cowpea and lima beans as intercrops. Yield per hectare decreased as distance of planting between rows increased to 100 cm and 120 cm. Monoculture tobacco at 75 cm yielded the highest cured leaf weight (1100.36 kg/ha), followed by tobacco with cowpea (1097.04 kg/ha). The intercrops had reduced about 100 kg of tobacco/ha at 75 cm distance of planting. Tobacco with mungbean produced the 154.6 kg of class A at 75 cm distance of planting. Monoculture cowpea had the highest yield at 100 cm distance while monoculture of lima beans and mungbean attained the highest yield at 75 cm planting distance. Total variable costs was highest at 75 cm planting distance in tobacco with cowpea and the highest net returns was obtained in tobacco with cowpea at 120 cm planting distance. Monoculture cowpea also gave a high net returns of P1856 at 75 cm planting distance and P2712 at 100 cm
