Physiological and hematological profile of sheep: Sustainable ruminant production under coconut plantation
General Note
Los Banos, Laguna: PCARRD, 1994. pp. 127-152. -(PCARR-IDRC Funded Proj.; Study 2.5)
Summary, Etc.
Physiological and hematological data were collected from 56 adult sheep aged one to three years and 40 lambs less than five months old. The animals were raised in cooperator farms and some government farms. There were no significant differences in the values among farm sites, and in most hematological values, between sexes. Compared with foreign values, the physiological values were rather high, and this was mainly attributed to the stress of handling. The hematological values were comparable with established data from foreign texts. The present data could be used as a reference materials for physiological and hematological values for sheep and lambs raised under Philippine conditions. With regard to the storage of blood samples, the results suggested that routine blood values (PCV, TEC, TLC and Differential WBC Count) were not significantly altered by storage condition (room or iced temperature) when analyzed within four to eight hours. However, at 24 hours, some of the blood values were significantly affected (P<0.05) and the individual measurements became less uniform. Hence, blood samples should be analyzed at the earliest time possible
