Mass propagation of priority exportable foliage plants
General Note
College, Laguna: University of the Philippines Los Banos, Institute of Plant Breeding, 1999. 57 p. -
Summary, Etc.
From June 1, 1996 to June 30, 1999, this project was able to identify suitable mass propagation techniques for different foliage plants (Murraya, Pleomele, Dracaena, Cordyline and Microsorium) which include the use of appropriate rooting and growing media and planting materials and a suitable propagation systems/planting environments. Specifically, the project was able to identify suitable nonsoil materials which can be used as alternative to the soil-based media commonly used by local ornamental growers. The different industrial by-products used were: coconut coirdust, burnt ricehull and sawdust which are cheap, abundant and locally available. Mineral components such as coarse sand, lahar and river sand were also used. These materials were usually used in combination with other nonsoil media. Likewise, appropriate plant growth regulators were identified to enhance root development especially in hard to foliage plants. These were IBA, NAA, Hormex and NAA applied in liquid form. A powdered rooting hormone, the "quick root" rooting mix also induced root growth in foliage plants. In the course of the study, uniform and quality planting materials were produced and at the same time technologies generated were disseminated through lecture demonstration, poster presentations in scientific conferences, information bulletins, video presentations, radio interviews and television features
