Title Statement
Greenhouse screening for resistance to drought, flooding and acid condition
General Note
College, Laguna: UPLB, 1987. pp. 8-42. -(UPLB-PCARRD-INSORMIL Funded; Study I)
Summary, Etc.
In the series of trials conducted to evaluate resistance to flooding, CS 174, CS 226, UPL Sg-5, CS 144, CS 265, CS 328, Acc 50 and Acc 78 sorghum varieties were found resistant. Evaluation was based on plant height, dry matter and visual scores relative to control. In the next trials that followed, those that were observed to be the least stressed were: Acc 1198, 1211, 1202, 1226, 2321 and CS 422. UPL Sg-5, the check variety used, was intermediate in resistance to flooding at seedling stage (SS). On the other hand, evaluation for resistance to low moisture supply at SS indicated that BTX 622 was the only entry most adapted to water deficit. The study also showed that when grown in acid soil, sorghum plants exhibited changes in the parameters mentioned expecially in the reduction in plant height, leaf area and dry matter production. Among the entries tested, CS 471 was least affected in five out of six parameters measured. The characterization of root system, SPV 138 was the most promising in terms of root volume, root length, root dry weight and root-shoot ratio. Other entries considered promising were CS 410, CS 499, CS 402 and DK 54
