Physical Description

Summary, Etc.
Essential oils obtained by hydro-steam distillation of the leaves of some local plants like eucalyptusV (Eucalyptus tereticornis Sm.), sulasi (Ocimum sanctum Linn. ), lagundi (Vitex negundo Linn.), bottlebrush (Callistemon lanceolatus DC. ), and paminta (Piper nigrum L.) were tested for antibacterial activity using the Filter Paper Disc-Agar Diffusion Method against three Gram-positive bacteria namely, Bacillus subtilis, Sarcina lutea and Streptococcus aureus and one Gram-negative bacteria, which is Escherichia coli. Of the five oils tested, Eucalyptus tereticornis essential oil was the most promising for Pharmaceutical dosage forms followed by Callistemon lanceolatus, Ocimum sanctum and Vitex negundo in this order. Piper nigrum oil showed no activity against the test organisms used. (Author's abstract)
