Tannin was isolated and purified from the dried bark of Psidium guajava L. by cold percolation using ether: alcohol (4:1) as solvent. The process produced 0.8 –1.2% of purified isolate. When subjected to physical and chemical analyses including thin layer chromatography, it showed qualitatively the presence of tannin. The tannin extract from guava bark has been found to contain phenols, alcohols, ketones, aldehydes, carboxylic acids and aromatic hydrocarbon through IR spectrum analysis. The purified tannin was proven therapeutically active as indicated by the in-vitro testing with microorganisms E. coli and M, aureaus. (Author's abstract)
