Summary, Etc.The study was conducted to determine the social and ecological conditions of landless agricultural workers in rice, sugarcane and tobacco farms. Two hundred respondents each in rice and tobacco production and 193 in sugarcane farming from the provinces of Bulacan, Tarlac and Pangasinan were interviewed and observed for this purpose. Findings revealed that only 50% of all respondents completed elementary education. The only means of production owned by the workers was their manual labor power. They converted their labor for goods or cash through the kabesilyahan system in rice production, the bayanihan in tobacco farming and the labor union in sugar cane production. In one cropping, 64% of rice workers and 36% of tobacco workers reported an income of P1,000 or less, 51% of sugar cane workers reported P1,000-P2,000. Nearly 60% of all respondents engaged in secondary activities like livestock raising, vegetable gardening and construction labor but these provided very minimal additional income. Problems faced by the workers included, among others, insecurity of job tenure, insufficiency of wages and physical injuries. Eighty-six percent of the respondents obtained loans, some even from usurious sources. Debts were incurred to cover basic household needs, medical expenses, school fees and payment for other debts. The foremost aspiration of each worker was to send his children to universities. Only 27% of the respondents were members of social, civil or religious organizations. The farm workers hardly participated in the government programs for their localities. They relied on the radio for information on the programs which the respondents felt did not directly benefit them. Given their difficult economic position, only one out of three respondents indicated willingness to seek other jobs
