Title StatementEvaluation of commercial drugs for the treatment of respiratory diseases in goats
General NoteMagalang, Pampanga: Pampanga Agricultural College, 1989. 30 p
Summary, Etc.A study on the evaluation of commercial drugs for the treatment of respiratory disease in goats was conducted at Pampanga Agricultural College, Magalang, Pampanga and National Animal Disease Diagnostic Laboratory (NADDL), University of the Philippines, Diliman, Quezon City. A total of 65 nondescript goats were used in this study. These animals were divided into two groups, the first group was composed of 36 goats which were artificially infected with Klebsiella spp. whereas the second group of 29 goats were infected with Pasteurella hemolytica. The drugs which were evaluated in the first group were Oxytetracycline, Penicillin-Streptomycin and Tylosin. Both Oxytetracycline and Penicillin-Streptomycin were used in combination with an expectorant while Tylosin was administered without expectorant. In the second group, the same drugs were used but without expectorant. The study revealed that: a) goats artificially infected with Klebsiella spp. manifested sysmptoms of respiratory infection four to five days post inoculation. On the other hand, goats artificially infected with Pasteurella hemolytica manifested symptoms of respiratory infection two days post inoculation. b) oxytetracycline (5mg/kg body weight given twice a day), Penicillin-Streptomycin (10,000 IU/kg body weight given once a day) produced comparative results in treating goats artificially infected with Klebsiella spp.. Symptoms indicative of respiratory infection disappeared at an average of 5.3-5.7 days from the start of the treatment. The effect of Oxytetracycline, Penicillin-Streptomycin and Tylosin did not produce comparable results in treating goats artificially infected with Pasteurella hemolytica. The earliest response was produced by Oxytetracycline (2.8 days from start of treatment) followed by Penicillin-Streptomycin (3.1days). Tylosin elicited its effect only 3.9 days after the start of treatment
