Title Statement
Morpho-physiological study on shade tolerance of corn
General Note
College, Laguna: University of the Philippines Los Banos, 1990. var. p. -(UPLB-PCARRD-USAID Proj.)
Summary, Etc.
Corn cultivars, IPB Var 1, IPB Var 2, Pioneer 6181 and Pioneer 3274 were planted on March 17, 1986 (dry cropping season) under partial shade and full sunlight growing conditions for morpho-physiological analysis. At full sunlight, Pioneer 3274 and Pioneer 6181 had significantly higher leaf area, leaf dry weight, and specific leaf weight than IPB Var 1 at silking stage. Pioneer 3274 had significantly higher leaf area index values than IPB Var 1 and Pioneer 6181. Under partial shade IPB Var 1 and Pioneer 3274 had the highest (19) and lowest (3) percent increase in plant height under partial shading. Plant height values ranged from 180 (IPB Var 1) to 155 cm (Pioneer3274). IPB Var 2 had the longest ears of 17 cm and the smallest ear diameter of 4.33 cm. Pioneer 3274 was the top yielder for both partial shade and full sunlight growing conditions. During the 1987 dry season, ten corn cultivars were obtained from the IPB corn breeding section and from private seed companies (San Miguel and Pioneer). Leaf area, leaf area ration and leaf area index of these two cultivars were significantly higher at tasselling than at early filling stage and vice versa for total dry matter production and specific leaf weight (SLW) and leaf area ratio (LAR). UPCA Var 2 with the highest leaf area per plant (5883.5 pm 2) was significantly different from EDC1, Tiniguib, SMC 317, UPCA Var 5, SMC 305 and P6181. However, total dry matter production was not significantly higher than P3208, P6181, P3228, UPCA Var 2and SMC 305. Leaf area index was highest in UPCA Var 2 but was not significantly different from P3208, P3228 and IPB Var 1
