Title Statement
Extrahepatic biliary duct obstruction: preoperative risk factor affecting postoperative outcome
Physical Description
20-25
Summary, Etc.
Eight clinical laboratory parameters in 108 patients having biliary duct obstruction who had biliary duct surgery over a period of five years were analyzed. Risk factors associated with a poor postoperative outcome and the sub-population of patients at greatest risk were defined. Seven of eight parameters evaluated were found to correlate significantly with mortality. Five or more risk factors present in a patient correlated significantly with postoperative mortality and morbidity. This risk factor analysis has the advantage of providing information rapidly and employing only clinical observations and readily available laboratory test. Patients with 5 or more risk factors should be considered for more aggressive preoperative measures
