Eight clinical laboratory parameters in 108 patients having biliary duct obstruction who had biliary duct surgery over a period of five years were analyzed. Risk factors associated with a poor postoperative outcome and the sub-population of patients at greatest risk were defined. Seven of eight parameters evaluated were found to correlate significantly with mortality. Five or more risk factors present in a patient correlated significantly with postoperative mortality and morbidity. This risk factor analysis has the advantage of providing information rapidly and employing only clinical observations and readily available laboratory test.
