Title Statement
Development patterns of ball handling skills in children with down syndrome
Physical Description
16-17
Summary, Etc.
Impairments among persons with down syndrome (DS) may hinder them from participating in ball play, an activity that promotes physical well-being, socialization, and personality development. This study described the observed development of ball skills among 30 children with DS. The performances of throwing, catching, and kicking a ball were recorded on video and analyzed using standardized checklists. Results indicated that maturity in kicking had been achieved. Delays in the development of catching and overhand throwing were evident. These suggest that problems in fine motor coordination and balance should be addressed to encourage children with DS to participate in ball play
