Title Statement
Study on the comparative response of upland crops to different drainage systems
General Note
Munoz, Nueva Ecija: CLSU, 1984. var. p. -(PCARR Proj. No. 948; Sub-Proj. 3; Study 3)
Summary, Etc.
The study determined the effect of drainage on the growth and yield of upland crops. An area of about 7,500 sq m was divided into three blocks. Open ditch and subsurface drainage systems were installed in two of the blocks while the third block was allowed natural drainage. Crops namely: mungbean, string beans, soybeans and okra were tested in these systems for two rainy seasons and one dry season. Plant recovery and seed germination were higher in areas with drainage systems. Crops planted in areas with either open or subsurface drainage system showed no significant difference in terms of growth and yield. Clay tile under drains with improvised sinks gave the same protection to upland crops as the open drain during wet periods. And while the cost of installing subsurface drains was higher, this could be offset by its ability to remove excess water from both the surface and the subsoil and in saving the land area that would otherwise be devoted to the open canal
