Title Statement
Field performance of three imported coconut hybrids grown under VISCA conditions
General Note
Baybay, Leyte:VISCA, 1986. 49 p. -(VCO.41.0777-0686.060)
Summary, Etc.
This study assessed the adaptability and potential of three imported coconut hybrids to the local growing conditions. One-hundred sixty seedlings of three IRHO hybrids (80 MYD x WAT, 60 CRD x WAT and 20 GDF x WAT) were planted in a nonreplicated plot using Umingan clay loam soil type with optimum inputs. The nine-year evaluation showed that MYD x WAT exhibited the most vigorous growth among the three. The highest yield was obtained by MYD x WAT with 95 nuts/tree per year followed by GDE x WAT and CRD x WAT both with 88 nuts/tree per year. Copra yields per hectare after five years were 1.96, 2.14 and 2.71 tons for CRD x WAT, MYD x WAT and GDE x WAT, respectively. GDE x WAT obtained the highest mean copra yield of 3.03 t/ha per year. This study cannot compare the economics of growing hybrids and the local talls. The use of these imported hybrids as planting materials in the region must still be done selectively because of their apparent susceptibility to bud rot and strong winds
