Title StatementMarketing systems/channels of mango growers in the MARATAF area
General NoteMagalang, Pampanga: PAC, 1988. var.p. -(Study 2)
Summary, Etc.A total of 114 mango growers, 43 traders and 60 selected consumers from Magalang and Arayat were interviewed. There were three channels identified in the marketing of mangoes within the Magalang-Arayat area. These were the wholesalers, retailers and consumers, to whom fruits were sold directly through pick-up method from the farm. Mango traders who arranged for contract growing and wholesale buying were usually the ones who performed the necessary marketing practices in disposing mango fruits. The most common activities were sorting, cleaning and packing. Farm price of mango was P4.52 and P4.40/kg in Magalang and Arayat, respectively. Wholesalers bought mangoes at P7.85 and P6.85/kg and consumers bought at P12.50 and P12.25/kg in Magalang and Arayat, respectively. The different problems encountered by both growers and traders were: lack of proper grading, stiff competition among traders, excessive supply of mangoes, perishability of fruit, low sales and price fluctuations. Mango consumers usually bought fruits once a week with an average of 3 kg each purchase. Majority preferred to eat fresh than processed fruit. Some, however, preferred processed mangoes such as candies, jam, or "halo-halo mix." The socioeconomic factors positively related to the quantity consumption of mangoes were age, civil status, and the total number of children in the family
