Physical Description93p. illus, figures, table
Summary, Etc.Weather as an everyday experience profoundly influences all activities of man. Weather and climate know no territorial boundary and respect no political ideology. For their mutual benefits, the nations of the world wisely recognize that only through close and effective international cooperation will the science of meteorology and its various applications to everyday life advance to such an extent as to meet the varying and increasing needs for more accurate information regarding weather and climate. True to the spirit of this international cooperation, the project " Meteorological Training and Research, Manila" jointly undertaken by the WMO as the Executing Agency for the United Nations Development Programme (Special Fund) and the Philippine Weather Bureau (now the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration) as the government co-operative large-scale meteorological activities between the Weather Bureau Institute of Meteorology (now the National Institute of Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Sciences), the Department of Meteorology at the University of the Philippines, and the Institute of Tropical Meteorology in Poona, India. The " India-Philippine Symposium on Tropical Cyclones and Tropical Meteorology " is a very good example of international cooperation presently going-on in all parts of the globe contributing to the phenomenal advances of the science of meteorology. This symposium is a discussion of research works on tropical cyclones, rain-producing mechanisms in the tropics in both the basic research stage and operational aspects, and topics of recent interest in tropical meteorology like the uses of meteorological satellites in weather analysis and forecasting and numerical weather prediction in the tropics. The participants are experts from UNDP-SF Project "Meteorological Training and Research, Manila", WMO/ECAFE Typhoon Committee Secretariat, and scientists from the Indian Institute of Tropical Meteorology, the University of the Philippines, Department of Meteorology and the Philippine Weather Bureau (now PAGASA). The publication of the papers presented in this symposium into this Technical Note will make available informative materials to those involved and interested in the different aspects of tropical meteorology. I take this opportunity to congratulate all those responsible for making this symposium a success
