Physical Description211 p
Summary, Etc.This compendium of essays on various facets of Philippine music is meant to give the reader a quick survey of the rich diversity of traditions that comprise Philippine music. It opens with an overview of music in the Philippines which serves as an introduction to the succeeding articles. Indigenous music discussed include vocal and instrumental music of the Cordillera highlands, instrumental music of the Mindanao highlands, vocal music of Islamic groups and vocal music of the Northern Mangyans of Mindoro. Music of Christianized groups is reviewed as Ritual and Non-ritual music. Art music is historically surveyed from the 16ht to the 19th century and a separate essay on the 20th Century Music explores the origins and subsequent stylistic directions taken by Filipino composers in the last century. The union of music and drama or theater is covered and encompasses the indigenous, European and American inspired forms as well as the contemporary revivals and integrations of these expressions. Separate articles are given to popular and protest music. While this collation is far from being all-inclusive, nevertheless, it is hoped that what has been presented will more than adequately give a panoramic view of wealth of traditions that have shaped what we call today Philippine music
