$aAn in-vitro digestibility technique using the rumen inoculum from a fistulated cow was conducted to determine the digestibilities of wood wastes. Physical and chemical treatments such as ballmilling, ammoniation, treatment with alkali, and nitration with subsequent alkali extraction were tested. Nitration with three to five percent nitric acid was the most effective in increasing the carbohydrate digestibility of wood wastes. Results showed that digestibility increased as the lignin content decreased, indicating that carbohydrate digestability was dependent on lignin content of the wood species. Coconut trunk sawdust gave the highest in-vitro digestibility when tested with three and five percent nitric acid. Using the same rations and bulls, feeding trials showed that untreated coconut trunk sawdust may replace silage as a source of energy. The average daily gain in weight was 0.93 kg and 0.32 kg for coconut trunk sawdust plus concentrate and silage plus concentrate, respectively.
