A large variety of volatile compounds is found in the peelings of citrus fruits, although usually in very small amounts. Citrus oil is is of great commercial interest because of its contribution to the flavor and odor of foods, perfumes and other chemical preparations.
Using the steam distillation process, the group was able to extract citrus oil. A total amount of 6.0 ml was obtained from 1200g of orange peelings.The components of the sample were tested by gas chromatography. It was found to contain 92.6 % limonene, 0.03 % a-citral and 0.03 % B citral.
The presence of citral and the very large amount of limonene promises a significant use for the orange peeling in the commercial industry
