Economic contributions of carabaos to the farm household and resource productivity analysis for carabaos
General Note
Kabacan, North Cotabato: USM, 1984. 110p
Summary, Etc.
Estimates were done on the economic contributions of the carabao to farm household, cost of carabao rearing at farm level, and productivity of inputs used in carabao raising in the provinces of Davao del Norte and South Cotabato (Region XI), and North Cotabato and Sultan Kudarat (Region XII). On the average, the value of work done by a carabao was higher in Region XII. Based on the type of farming system, the carabao's work had a higher value in annual-crop based/farmers (P1,193.46) than in perennial-crop based farms (P882.02) for both regions. The carabao was utilized more on on-farm rather than off-farm activities, giving a higher value for on-farm use. A carabao was utilized more on on-farm activities in large than in small farms. The carabao was also used for milk and manure, other than as draft animal, but at a minimum level. The cost of rearing the animal consisted of material input cost, labor cost and depreciation cost. In Region XI, cost per year for carabao raising consisted of P160.12 for material inputs, P1178.04 for labor and P179.87 for depreciation cost. In Region XII, cost per year was P188.40, P1143.30 and P112.11 for material input, labor and depreciation costs, respectively. The value of work done by the carabao was well explained by the factors affecting it as shown in the double-log model for productivity analysis (highest regression value). Generally, in Southern Mindanao, carabaos owned by Ilocanos were more productive than those owned by other tribes. Carabaos in irrigated farms had higher productivity than those in nonirrigated farms. Increase in feed costs and man-days spent on on-farm and off-farm activities also increased the productivity of the animal. A more in-depth investigation to clearly explain the results of this study was recommended
