Summary, Etc.The study focused on exploring for the first time the potentials of Tonkin seed against local clinical isolates of methicillin (oxacillin)-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and rifampin-resistant Mycobacterium tuberculosis (MDRTB). Using the paper disk-diffusion method, all thirty-nine clinical MRSAs used were sensitive to Tonkin at 125 ug, with an average range of inhibition zone diameters of 13.2-15.2 mm. Standard resistant strain S. aureus ATCC 43300 showed 15.2 - 16.3 mm, as against 19.2 - 20.2 mm by the -sensitive strain S. aureus ATCC 29253. By the tube dilution method, minimum inhibitory concentration (MIC) ranges against 16 clinical MRSAs were 64-512, 16-256 & 16-128 ug/mL for methanolic crude extract (MCE), dichloromethane fraction (DCM) & muricatinJMD 11-13 (IMD), respectively. Minimum Bactericidal Concentration (MBC) values were at 64-512, for MCE; 32-256, for DCM; and 16-128 ug/mL, for IMD. Regardless of Tonkin sample, the MIC and MBC values against -sensitive S. aureus ATCC 29213 were 1-2 dilution levels lower than those against ATCC 43300 which showed activity at 128-256 ug/mL. Tonkin MCE, DCM & IMD at 80 ug were relatively equipotent to 0.8 ug, 8.2 ug, and 32.6 ug of vancomycin, respectively. By the MICs & MBCs produced, these indicate the potency of the three Tonkin samples in the following order: MD>DCM>MCE by 1 dilution level of their MIC and MBC (p16 ug/mL for the clinical isolates.
