Title StatementHead injury as preditor of cervical spine injury: A 5-year review
Physical Description49-53
Summary, Etc.All patients diagnosed with head injury were included in the study. Penetrating injuries such as gunshot and stab wounds were excluded from the study. The degree of head injuries were graded according to Glascow Coma Scores then correlated with presence of cervical spine injury determined by tomographic evaluation. Out of the 687 charts with diagnosis bearing 'head injury,' 497 charts met the inclusion criteria and reviewed. Among patients with Head Injury, 60% involved the Mid Cervical Spine. The relationship between Head Injury and Cervical Spine appeared to be directly related to the degree of severity of head injury, The more severe the head injury, the greated would be the risk of cervial spine injury. Patients with Severe/Moderate Injury have a PPV of 12% while patients with Mild Head Injury have 2.8% PV or likelihood with concomitant cervical spine injury. Head Injury as predictor of cervical spine injury has sensitivity of 64% and specificity of 72%
