Summary, Etc.The study was conducted from January 1981 to February 1983 to evaluate the productive performance of purebred and crossbred Pietrain gilts and boars under prevailing conditions in Holiday Hills Stock and Breeding Farms in San Pedro, Laguna. All crossbred boars and gilts were sired by Pietrain boars. Purebred Pietrain boars had average daily gain of 594 g, feed efficiency of 2.65, backfat thickness of 1.85 cm, and selection index of 136. Purebred Pietrain gilts had 572 g, 2.58, 1.97 cm and 135 for average daily gain, feed efficiency, backfat thickness and selection index, respectively. Pietrain boars had about the same selection indeces as the purebred Duroc and Yorskhire boars. However, the latter had slower growth rate and lesser backfat than the former. Pietrain gilts had significantly slower growth rate and thinner backfat than the purebred Yorkshire and Duroc gilts. However, the former had higher selection index and were more efficient than the latter. Crossbred Pietrain had a significantly higher selection indeces than the purebred Yorkshire and Duroc boars and gilts
