Summary, Etc.An all-weather drying chamber for freshly bleached rattan cores and wickers was developed and tested in the plant site of Asia Rattan Manufacturing Corporation Inc. at Pulongbulo, Angeles City. The chamber is of the furnace type that uses wood wastes as fuel. The design incorporates an auxiliary heat source: steam coming from a steam generator installed principally for bleaching operations. The dryer is complete with heat exchanges and air circulation, humidification and ventilation systems. The structure is suitable for large-scale commercial operations. Samples of bleached rattan cores and wickers dried inside the chamber and outdoor were assessed in terms of degree of whiteness, bending property and finishing quality. There was not much significant difference in the over-all performance efficiency of the two drying systems except in the degree of whiteness. Cores dried inside the conditioning chamber were whiter than those dried outdoor. Drying time inside the chamber was three-five hours while outdoor drying took 3-24 hours. However, more bending failures occurred in the outdoor samples than in the drying chamber samples
