Jatropha curcas L (Family Euphorbiaceae), commonly known as tubang-bakod, is a multipurpose low maintenance plant found throughout the Philippines. It has many traditional uses and considerable potential including wound-healing property. Curcain, a proteolytic enzyme, is said to be responsible for the plant's wound-healing activity and it can be found in the latex. The latex was collected and lyophilized to preserve its properties. A 10 percent concentration of the lyophilized latex was formulated into an ointment, which obtained a pale-brown color, smooth texture, and having no distinct odor. Evaluation of its effectiveness was done using 20 male albino rats, which were divided into 4 groups: standard group using Calmoseptine ointment, control, pure latex, and the 10 percent latex ointment. Validation of the wound healing properties of the different groups was done on the incised wounds of albino rats using a tensiometer. Wound reduction rate (WRR) was also computed. Statistical tools, Independent sample T-test and one-way analysis of variance (ANOVA), were used to validate the effectiveness of the ointment. The results of the formulated 10 percent J curcas latex ointment were comparable to the Calmoseptine ointment in terms of WRR and tensile strength. Significant wound-healing activity was detected in J curcas latex ointment. In comparison with other wound-healing preparations, ointment was also proven to be economical.
