Summary, Etc.Background : The objective of the study is to compare the outcome of patients who underwent valvular heart surgery with and without the use of pulmonary function test as part of preoperative risk assessment tool. Study design: Prospective cross sectional study Study setting and time period: All patients admitted at the Philippine Heart Center from August 2005 to December 2005 who underwent valvular heart surgery were risk stratified by Shapiro's risk stratification and modified Shapiro's risk stratification. Result : A Total of 37 patients who underwent valvular heart surgery were enrolled. The mean age of the subjects was 37 ± 10 years. Most of the subject had mitral valve defects. Seventy percent were extubated within 24 hours, while 6 subjects (16.2%) were extubated within 24-48 hours after surgical procedure. One was extubated more than 48 hours after surgical procedures. Twenty one subjects or 56.8% developed various complications from cardiac surgeries while 43.2% experienced no complications from surgical procedures. Most subjects (14) developed cardiovascular complications rather than (8) pulmonary complications. The sensitivity and specificity based on the shapiro's risk stratification showed 88.89% and 3.12% respectively while based on modified shapiro's risk stratification showed 55.56% and 62.5% respectively. Conclusion : This study showed that pulmonary function test can be optional tool rather than an essential part of the assessment tool in cardiac patient undergoing valvular heart surgery.0
