Title StatementCommercial application of Bioethylene from 'Kakawati' leaves for ripening 'Saba' bananas
Summary, Etc.The use of 'kakawati' leaves as source of bioethylene for the ripening of saba bananas was tried on a commercial scale using 600-800 fruits in a 210 li capacity drum as the ripening container. The leaves were layered between fruits inside the drum. Compared with the laboratory scale where the optimum kakawati leaves to fruit ratio was 5:95 w/w and with an exposure time of one - two days, the optimum for the commercial scale is 7:93 w/w and with an exposure time of one day. No economic advantage was shown when the drum was aerated during treatment or when carbon dioxide absorbents were placed in the ripening chamber. Bioethylene-treated fruits ripened six days earlier than untreated fruits. Moreover, weight loss was significantly less (ca. 5% compared to 19% for the control). Ripening was also more uniform and of better color quality than untreated fruits. Quality of bioethylene-ripened fruits is comparable to those ripened with traditional ripening agents like calcium carbide or ethrel, but bioethylene is definitely much cheaper
