Title StatementProposed weight and height reference standards for 0-19 year old Filipino children
General NoteManila: FNRI, [1988]. 43p
Summary, Etc.This is a collaborative study between FNRI and Philippine Pediatric Society to develop anthropometric reference standards for nutritional and clinical evaluation of 0-19 year old Filipino children. A three-stage cluster sampling design was used with a total of 26,961 children from all regions except Samar Island, Regions IX and XII. Descriptive analysis was utilized using cubic spline technique, centile tables and curves. The weight and height of boys were greater than girls for the same age up to pubertal growth spurt when girls overtake boys. The boys started to get taller and heavier again by 14 years of age. Except in early infancy, the present values were lower than 1971 FNRI standards, 14% for weight-for-age and 6% for height-for-age, for both sexes. Likewise, present values were lower than NCHS standards from 18 to 28% weight-for-age and 5-8% height-for-age. It is recommended that these values be validated in the field among healthy and malnourished children to delineate the levels which malnutrition is likely to be present
