Title StatementCacao breeding project
General NoteCollege, Laguna: University of the Philippines Los Banos, 1986
Summary, Etc.Among 17 hybrids evaluated for yields, hybrid UF12 x R41, UF667 x UF242, and SCA6 x ICS44 were predicted as the best yielders. Under clonal characterization, the clones UF168, POUND12, R41, UF613, and DR x DC38 showed extended harvest period and consequently produced the higher number of pods than the rest under conditions obtaining in the genebank. UF242 alone bear no fruits for four straight months. In yield component evaluation of genebank accessions, the single tree genotypes (i.e. off types) was the highest yielders in the UPLB cacao genebank. Twenty new clones including dwarf type Criollo from Mataas na Kahoy, Batangas, and a Giant' cacao from Paete, Laguna, were added to the Narrahan Cacao Genebank Collection. In asexual propagation, chupon grafting showed greatest promise for rejuvenation purposes with scions starting to flower 12 months after grafting. Mosquito Bug (Helopeltis sp.) infestation was a major problem at UPLB in the latter half of 1986 causing genebank current crop to shrivel and wilt. No resistance was shown by the clones. Open pollinated progenies from Amenolado (23ACD), SC2(24BCD) and EET19 (18ABCEF) showed more than 90%
