Summary, Etc.A total of 111 respondents (33 gatherers/permittees, 20 traders/contract buyers and 58 handicraft and furniture manufacturers) were interviewed to gather information on the supply and demand for rattan. Based from the recorded export sales, the annual raw material requirement of the rattan furniture/handicraft exporting industry was estimated at 103 million lineal meters. For the next ten years, the projected demand would range from 151-647 million lineal meters. From the inventory of the Forest Management Bureau (FMB), a 4.5 billion lineal meters of rattan was reported available in the natural forest. However, since rattan coexist with dipterocarp forest and government have policies on allowable cuts, availability of rattan to end-users would remain a problem. Hence, replanting programs is needed. Some problems encountered by the rattan handicraft/furniture manufacturers were lack of capital, scarcity of supply, peace and order, 'lagay system', price fluctuation, delayed payment of exports and additional market outlets
