Title StatementWheat research and development program, project I: varietal improvement
General NoteCollege, Laguna: UPLB, 1988. 15p. -(PCARRD-ASSP Funded Project)
Summary, Etc.A five-year evaluation period was conducted to improve further the yield and yield components of wheat varieties and promising lines. The project was composed of five studies, namely: breeding proper, seed production and multiplication, screening for resistance to environmental stresses, screening for disease resistance, and screening for insect resistance. About 257 cross combinations were done. In the progeny rows, 13,914 plants and 156 lines were identified while 63 entries were found promising in the preliminary yield trial. A total of 9,389 kg processed seeds of the released varieties and promising lines were produced and used/distributed in Region 1 and 2 pilot production farm, researchers, farmers, extension technicians, and students. In the screening for resistance to environmental stresses, 49, 76, and 51 entries were selected as resistant to waterlogging, high temperature and drought conditions, respectively. Of the selections/lines evaluated for resistance against Helminthosporium leaf spot 579 and 546 lines were identified resistant under field and induced methods of screening, respectively. For root rot, 679 entries were resistant under field conditions and 372 entries in the artificial inoculation technique. The study on the field reaction of wheat accessions to major insect pests revealed that 400, 630, 947 and 860 entries were resistant to seedling maggot, leaf miner, earworm and semi-looper, respectively
