Title StatementObservations on the life cycle and egg-shell of orientocreadium batrachoides tubangui, 1931 (Trematoda: Allocreadiidae) in clarias macrocephalus gunther, 1864
Physical Description183-206
Summary, Etc.Experimental evidence indicates that the embryonated eggs of orientocreadium batrachoides Tubangui,1931 from Clarias macrocephalus Gunther, 1864 are eaten by the intermediate host, Lymnaea viriditis Quoy and Gaimard, develop into mother, daughter, daughter sporocysts and xiphidiocercariae in the digestive gland in 18 to 20 days. Ovigerous worms were recovered from the small intestines of C. macrocephalus previously fed with small pieces of mantle and /or foot muscles of infected L. viriditis with metacercariae of O. batrachoides. Histochemical tests showed the presence of tyrosine-rich vitelline cells and that the egg-shell is scleroprotien. Out of fifty snails exposed to single embryonated egg, only seven or 14% were positive for the infection. The number of sporocysts and cercariae produced from each of seven infected snails was 1,120 to 1,707 and11,203 to 22,977 respectively. The number of cercariae produced per sporocyst was 10 to 15. An average length of cercarial shedding period was 61.4 days. Ultra-violet irradiation of cercariae and metacercariae for 6 to 7.5 hours at different distances (10, 15,20 and 25 cm) using two -watt ultra-violet electrical lamps with 3,600 angstorm units proved lethal under laboratory conditions
