Composite board from chemically treated wood of fast-growing wood species
General Note

Summary, Etc.
Wood from giant ipil-ipil (Leucaena leucocephala (Lam.) de Wit), a fast-growing species, was treated with nitric acid and subjected to heat treatment. Chemical changes were analyzed to ilucidate the mechanisms involved in the formation of bonds during hot-pressing. Electron spectroscopy for chemical analysis (ESCA) spectra showed the generation of carbonyl groups in the acid-heat-treated wood. Nonappearance of peaks for the insoluble carboxylic groups suggested that decarboxylation due to heating could occur. Measurement of the soluble and insoluble acids by titration of the water and sodium acetate extracts, respectively, showed that at ambient temperature, insoluble acids approached saturation with increase in acid applied, while soluble acids increased infinitely. Heating sharply increased the insoluble acids in the early heating period, followed by a decaying trend at longer heating time indicating decarboxylation. Water-soluble acids decreased progressively with heating due largely to the chemical reduction of excess nitric acid. Infrared spectral analysis indicated the water soluble fraction as rich in degradation products. Partial resinification of these degradation products was indicated in the lessening of alcohol-benzene extract and the consequent increase in lignin content on heating at longer periods. Composite boards produced from unwashed acid-treated wood exhibited strength and dimensional stability far superior than boards from washed material. Thus resinification of the water-soluble degradation products contributed greatly to the formation of strongbonds
