Summary, Etc.Books are one of the most authoritative sources of gender roles. Gender roles are socially defined appropriate behavior for each gender. Children's picture books, specifically, carry implicit messages of stereotypical gender roles. This study aims to describe how males and females are represented and portrayed in children's picture storybooks in the Philippines. The study determines (a) whether there are significant differences between the number of male and female characters in these books; (b)whether there are significant differences in the portrayal of activities and occupations of males and females in these picture books; (c) and if there are any trends or changes in the representation of males and females
Results of the study showed that: (a)Male characters outnumber female characters specially in illustrations; (b) More male characters are shown in more occupation than females. When female characters do appear in picture books, they are either depicted as mothers, housewives or employed in traditional feminine occupations; (c) Males are shown oftenest in Aggressive and Professional activities and females in Domestic activities; and (d) There is a clear distinction between the occupations and activities of male characters and the occupations and activities of female characters
The above is clear evidence which suggests gender bias in children's picture storybooks in the Philippines
Using content analysis, the text and illustrations of a representative sample of 52 books out of a population of 417 were analyzed
