Title Statement
Plaque characterization of culprit coronary lesions in patients presenting with acute coronary syndromes versus chronic stable angina pectoris using intravascular ultrasound
Physical Description
129-135
Summary, Etc.
Objectives: To compare plaque characteristics of culprit lesions of patients presenting with acute coronary syndrome (ACS) versus chronic stable angina pectoris (CSAP) using intravascular ultrasound (IVUS). Design: Retrospective cohort Setting: Cardinal Santos Medical Center Catheterization Laboratory Patients: There were 70 patients with technically adequate IVUS studies: 42 CSAP and 28 ACS. Among the patients with ACS, 43% (12/28) presented as ST elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) and had no antecedent history of angina; 57% (16/28) presented as unstable angina (UA) and non-ST elevation myocardial infarction (NSTEMI) with antecedent history of angina. MAIN OUTCOME: IVUS-derived atheroma burden, lumen area stenosis, remodelling index and plaque MEASURES morphology of culprit coronary lesions. RESULTs: In all groups atheroma burden occupied >85% of the entire artery (95% for STEMI, 90% for UN A/ NSTEMI and 89% for CSAP, p=NS). The lumen area was 5 mm2 for STEMI, 4.2 mm2 for UN NSTEMI, and 4.1 mm2 for CSAP (p=NS). The remodelling index was positive for STEM I (1.6) (p
