Title Statement
Economic significance of Albizia falcataria tree farming to small farmholders
General Note
College, Laguna: FORI, 1985. 81p
Summary, Etc.
Some 359 smallholders from the provinces of Surigao and Agusan were interviewed to determine the social and economic benefits derived from Albizia plantations. Findings revealed that the average cost of establishing one hectare tree farm of Albizia was P899.63 in Agusan and P958.24 in Surigao. The total costs varied depending on the mode of labor utilization, accessibility of the site and maintenance practices. The activities involved in tree farming were land and planting stock preparation, outplanting, weeding, fertilizing, maintenance, and harvesting. Labor was provided mainly by hired workers. However, each farmer had one family helper in the transport of seedlings to plantation site, replanting, and maintenance activities on the farm. The respondents harvested a mean of 155.98 cu m of pulpwood/ha (six- to seven-year rotation) in Agusan and 183.26 cu m in Surigao. Using the 1981 buying price of P72.75/cu m set by the Paper Industries Corporation of the Philippines (PICOP) these volumes were valued at P11,347.55 and P13,332.00 for Agusan and Surigao, respectively. Three economic indicators namely, Net Present Value (NPV), Internal Rate of Return (IRR) and Benefit-Cost Ratio (B/C) were utilized to analyze the viability of tree farming (1981 prices). The tree farmers earned an average income of P1,605.59/ha at 12% interest rate. At 25%
