Title StatementSocio-ecology, cognition and aspirations of rural families in La Union
General NoteBacnotan, La Union: DMMSU, 1990. 74p. -(PCARRD Funded)
Summary, Etc.The study determined the socioecology, cognitions and aspirations of the rural people in nine selected municipalities of La Union. Interview schedule was used among 207 fishermen, 175 lowland farmers and 170 upland farmers who served as respondents. Data were analyzed through frequency counts, percentages, Sandler's A-test and Chi-square test of independence. People in general prefer to live in communities where they originated, e.g. fishing village. Parents and children are generally younger in fishing areas than in farming communities. Annual average family income of P10,000.00 and above was not enough, yet people did not find other means of livelihood to augment their income. Kerosene lamps, open wells as source of water supply, firewood as fuel, and pit privy type of toilets were mostly found in the rural areas. Most of the family heads attained lower education level (Grades 1 to 6). Majority of the respondents were Roman Catholic. Mothers/children were usually benefited by rural health services. People did not have organizational affiliation due to lack of awareness of existing government programs. Children's education was the primary concern of the parents rather than acquisition of lands and tools for fishing or for farming. Aspirations for working abroad ranked the highest rather than working in their hometown
