Title StatementThe role of women in the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) in improving the nutrition of women and children
Physical Description69-81
Summary, Etc.To determine the role of women in the Comprehensive Agrarian Reform Program (CARP) in improving the nutrition of women and children, work patterns and time allocation for various activities, perceptions and attitudes on childcare, farm work, earning income and community projects among women in land reform beneficiary households were examined. The study was done in seven towns of Nueva Ecija including 106 land reform beneficiary households. time allocation data were generated from one-day activity diaries kept by the women covering four different agricultural periods, preschool nutritional status, calorie and protein adequacy of food intake, perception and attitudes towards nutrition of children and potential participation in community programs. Focus group discussions with the women were also conducted to elicit women's perception and information on attitudes regarding their role on the above-mentioned activities. Results showed that women tended to reduce childcare time during land preparation/planting and harvesting in comparison to domestic or non-farm activities. Childcare time was shown to be a significant indicator of energy and protein intake while non-farm economic activities positively influenced food expenditures. In order to enhance the nutrition improvement potentials of CARP, the following programs for women may be implemented: re-orientation and strengthening of women's group as a major organization; encouraging and building capabilities for women-led projects, e.g. community food processing activity; creation of women support group, e.g. day care and growth monitoring; and development and utilization of appropriate home technologies to increase women's efficiency in home production
