Title StatementControl of cabbage insect pests by Metarhizium anisopliae (Metschikoff)
General NoteCollege, Laguna: University of the Philippines Los Banos, National Crop Protection Center, 1991. 90
Summary, Etc.Laboratory and field tests were conducted to determine the potentials of Metarhizium anisopliae for the control of the insect pests of cabbage. Out of the 28 strains tested, Fm8 and Fm12 showed high virulence to the larvae of Plutella xylostella and Crocidolomia binotalis but exhibited little or no activity against larvae of Spodoptera litura and nymphs of Myzus persicae and Lipaphis erysimis in laboratory assay. A liquid medium was formulated to facilitate the production of large amounts of conidia in a diphasic system. The two selected strains of M. anisopliae were effective in controlling populations of P. xylostella when tested on cabbage under field conditions. However, strain Fm8 was judged as slightly more potent than strain Fm12 based on larval mortality injury and yield. Horizontal transmission of the fungi by environmental contamination resulted in an epizootic that reduced field populations of P. xylostella larvae to insignificant levels in all treatments including commercial insecticide-treated and untreated control plots. The events that led to the epizootic are discussed
